Type Locality and Naming

Songliao Basin east. In 1980 the Regional Geological Survey Party, Jilin Bureau of Geology, named the coal-bearing green member in the lower part of the original Shulan Formation as the Bangchuigou Formation. The naming section is located at Dongfu Bangchuigou 7 km southwest of the seat of Shulan County, Jilin Province.


Lithology and Thickness

Pebbly sandstone and sandstone with claystone. In addition to clay minerals there are thin coal beds. It is characterized by a rock association of gray and grayish sandstone and siltstone containing clays of commercial value and thin coal beds.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Disconformably or unconformably overlies the Paleocene Gangyao Fm, or unconformably overlies the late Variscan granite body.

Upper contact

The formation conformably or disconformably underlies the Eocene Shulan Fm

Regional extent

This formation is distributed at Dakouqin, Qianyao, Gangyao, Wapengyao and Bangchuigou, Shulan County.

Fossils

Pollen of angiosperms predominates in sporopollen, while pollen of gymnosperms and spores of pteridophytes are scarce, mainly including Alnipollenites, Quercoidites and Betulaceoipollenites.


Age 

The sporopollen assemblage is similar to that in the Guchengzi Fm of the Fushun Gr, whose age is tentatively assigned to late Paleocene to early Eocene.
